When the fact do not live up to the legend, print the legend!
So many stories about Bonneville Salt Flat Racing: sorting out the fact from fancy may prove impossible to do. I plan to get a signed statement of fact from each person that we interview, that the follow account is true to their memory.
Roger LaCroix remembers John Athans, Luther, Ed and Art Sherman talking about Rollie Freed and Bert Monro. Art Sherman rode Luther's 500 cc Triumph at Bonneville Salt Flats during SpeedWeek. Rollie Freed use to race the Vincent Black Shadows on the Salt. Rollie is the rider in the famed photo: Rollie on his Vincent, laying flat on his stomage, with his toes point straight to the rear, at speed on the salt, with Rollie wearing only a swim suit! Roger meet Luther in 1966, when Luther was learning how to fly at Compton Air Port.
Roger bought Luther's Triumph Tiger Speed Twin 500 cc from Luther's widow wanting to preserve the bike for the future. 25 years laterwe are racing it again in the vintage class using lady riders to set the Land Speed Records.
Burt test rode Luther's triumph in the City of Inglewood, down Inglewood Blvd. where Isky racing Cams were located at that time. Isky Cams is now located on Broadway in the City of Gardena. The Triumph having only straight pipes, no mufflers made lots of noise, which attracted the unwanted attention of the city cops. Reportedly Bert once again talked his way out of a traffic ticket, while Luther, Ed , and John watched and laughed. Bert even had the cops laughing - the
new Zealand charm.
Ed would buy Bert a old car to drive to Bonneville, Burt expressly liked the Plymouth with the stright six engine.
Ed's does not remember Luther going to the Salt.
Roger did not meet Bert.
Luther was asked at a 1/4 mile drag race, how many rpm is the triumph turning? Luther stated that he did not know, he never looked at the tack. Luther's next run he looked at the tack, and then
run off the end of the 1/4 mile track into a barb wire fence. Kenny Lyon
